About 500 years ago, there was an eccentric Japanese Zen Buddhist monk called Ikkyū. If you happened to be born and raised in Japan, probably you know some of his stories. Here is one of them.

One day during a new year celebration time, he was walking around in the city of Kyoto, saying ‘be cautious, be cautious’. He had a bamboo stick in his hand and on top of it, a human skull was hanged. He wanted to remind people that life is limited.
